Hanna believed that care for your body internally would show on the outside. Healthy skin is important to people of all ages whether you’re trying to protect yourself from sun damage, use natural home remedies to brighten your skin and address wrinkles, or find products that will improve the condition of your skin over time. We’ve got home remedies for glowing skin, reducing wrinkles or cellulite, and more!
Home Remedies for Glowing Skin
The following come from Hanna’s book Ageless Remedies from Mother’s KitchenCucumber—this vegetable is useful for clearing the complexion because it provides a hormone needed by the pancreas to produce insulin. Use cucumber slices to tighten the skin around the eyes or to clear up blackheads by rubbing the slices on the skin. Drink the juice of a few cucumbers to help cleanse the skin from the inside out.
Strawberries—Hanna called this fruit a skin berry and believed in its ability to clear the skin when eaten daily. Try to find organic, when available, and increase your intake of this fruit for clearer skin. By rubbing fresh strawberries on your face you’ll also see benefits but note that it may discolor the skin for a bit.
Nutmeg—add 1/3 teaspoon of fresh ground nutmeg to 1 teaspoon honey and a half cup of hot water. Drink this blend 3 mornings in a row and then take a break for 3 mornings. Repeat 8 to 9 times.
Epsom Salts—make a brine of Epsom salts and pat on the face with cotton; allow to dry before going to bed. Do this until blemishes dry up.
Witch Hazel—find pure Witch Hazel extact to use after washing the face. Be careful which types you purchase; several brands only contain a small percentage of Witch Hazel with the remainder of the bottle containing alcohol or other fillers and some of these could do more harm than good for your skin. DIY Remedies for Glowing Skin
Fennel—Puree 2 raw fennel bulbs and 2 sprigs of fresh thyme until smooth. Heat to a boil in a sauce pan then remove from heat and add the juice of half a lemon. Allow the mixture to cool completely then apply under the eyes with a cotton ball. Do not rinse; store mixture in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. Use this DIY remedy to brighten the skin under the eyes.
Kiwi—Puree 2 kiwis with 3 tablespoons plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon orange juice, and 1 tablespoon almond or olive oil. Use this blend as a mask to brighten your skin. Allow the mask to dry completely (applying after washing and drying face). The seeds of the kiwi gently exfoliate as the fruit acids add more elasticity to the skin.
Clementine—Mix together 2 peeled and pureed clementines, ½ cup ground, rolled oats, 3 teaspoons raw honey and 2 teaspoons jojoba oil. Add a little water if you want the consistency to be a bits thinner. Apply this mixture to your face and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water and keep any unused mixture in a tightly covered jar for up to 2 weeks.
Tips for Glowing Skin
Drink Up! If you’re not getting enough water each day, it’s going to show on your face! Be sure to flush toxins from your system with water to have smooth skin and improved function of your organs.
For dry or chapped skin: mix 3 drops lemon oil and 3 drops glycerin to heal chapped hands. For the body mix 1 part each of cocoa butter, lanolin, rose water, and elder flower water. Apply either of these mixtures to the skin daily.
