Fall leaves at Hanna's Herb Shop

Fall at Hanna’s Herb Shop brings beautiful colors, but also more people with colds. Make sure to keep your immune system healthy from the start of the season.

As the days of summer slip away, fall colors and cooler temperatures will greet us and bring along the sniffles and sneezes of cold and flu season. Want to be prepared and guard yourself and your family? We’ve got easy ways to keep everyone healthy! Stimulate and boost your immune system so you can beat the bug with these tips for fall.

Be Anti-Antibacterial: Do you keep anti-bacterial gels or wipes in your car or bag to ensure you’re attacking any and every germ you and your family come in contact with? Maybe it’s time to cut back on that habit. When we allow our bodies to be exposed to the regular microbes in the air, soil, and water of our homes and communities, our immune systems become stronger. Part of building up our immunity is through exposure to the environment in which we live. Unless you’re traveling, give the antibacterial products a rest for a while and let your kids play in the dirt a bit.

Eat Right to Feel Well: A healthy diet provides us with the vitamins and minerals our system needs to stay healthy and while eating right year round is important, it’s especially beneficial when those around us are sick or we feel we’re coming down with a bug. Avoid high-glycemic foods (like white breads and pastas) as well as ultra-processed food items whenever possible and pay attention to your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Silybum marianum, Milk Thistle

A healthy liver is a part of being healthy for fall.

Start Loving Your Liver: Our livers act as the detoxification center of our bodies and when a pathogen enters our system, our liver plays a big role in keeping us well. A happy liver means minimal sickness because the body is able to combat an illness more easily. Want to keep your liver happy daily? Try to minimize your use of over-the-counter or prescription medications and consider adding herbs to your routine; Milk Thistle is a great herb for liver support; read more about the benefits of milk thistle.

Hot and Cold Hydrotherapy: This could be tricky, depending on how brave you are with water temperatures. It’s a common belief among naturalists that a burst of cold water at the end of your shower can boost the hardiness of your immune system. Once you’re ready to turn the water off, opt to only shut off the hot water and give your body a quick dowsing in the cold water. Aside from acting as an immediate wake-up call, you’ll hopefully get your immune system built up over time so that, once cold and flu season strikes, you’ll be ready.

Consider this: It’s not such a bad thing to get a cold at the beginning of the season. If you’ve been following these tips for fall and keeping your body healthy your sick time should be fairly minimal and you’ll be inoculated against this year’s strain of virus! Keep your intake of vitamin C up, get the proper rest your system needs, and put away the antibacterial products and over-the-counter meds for a healthy immune system for a healthy fall.
