Fresh peppermint teaPeppermint is in my top 5 of favorite herbs and I use some form of it daily. With a long list of practical uses (and some unexpected ones) for peppermint essential oil and fresh or dried leaves, take a look at why peppermint should be in your herbal arsenal.

Peppermint Essential Oil Uses

I’m an early riser during the work week but I’m also a “snoozer”… I hit snooze at least 3 times each morning. Once I’ve peeled myself from my bed and sleepily stumble into the shower, the first thing I reach for is peppermint essential oil. A few drops in a hot shower make for a quick morning pick-me-up because of its energizing, invigorating and clean aroma; after my mini-spa experience I’m a functioning person again. Other ways to gain energy from the oil: diffuse while driving (with a CarScenter) to remain alert, inhale at the start of your workday (or workout!) to get going, or dab on your wrists when 4 o’clock fatigue sets in. Aside from using the oil for energy, I’ve had great success in treating headaches and aching muscles with it as well. When applying peppermint oil directly skin, you should use a carrier oil to avoid irritation. For a headache, blend one drop of oil with a few drops of the carrier oil of your choice and massage into your temples. To treat aching muscles, add 12 drops to 1 ounce ofPeppermint Essential OIls the carrier oil (like grapeseed or jojoba) and massage to feel good as new. Other topical applications include scratches, itching, bug bites, burns, shingles, rheumatism and ringworm. Feeling under the weather or having trouble breathing? Add a few drops of the oil to a bowl of very hot water, cover your head with a towel then lean over and breathe in the vapors. Because of their purity and potency, my favorite brands of peppermint essential oil are Young Living and Simpler’s Botanicals.

Other Peppermint Uses

stomachWhile the oil is energizing, dried peppermint can be useful in helping you to sleep and aiding in digestion when enjoyed as a tea.
