Healthy Summer Tip–Nausea

Fresh ginger is excellent for nausea.

Healthy Summer Tip: use orange essential oil and ginger for nausea.

You may have heard that ginger can help ease the nausea associated with pregnancy but this little culinary wonder is useful for all types of nausea. Whether you’re car sick, out on the high seas, or experiencing trouble after being an adventurous eater on vacation, ginger is a beneficial addition to your preparedness kit. Ginger tea, tincture, candies, or thin slices of raw ginger can each alleviate your nausea symptoms and help you get back to enjoying the weather and activities. Rubbing pure ginger oil on your lower abdomen and inhaling orange essential oil are also ways to achieve quick relief as is the use of an acupressure wristband that stimulates the Nei-Kuan acupressure point.

Concern of sunscreen safety is a topic that heats quicker than the weather most summers. Not all sunscreens are created equal since some are toxic and others, ironically, break down in the presence of sunlight so what can you do? Websites like the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database can help outline the dangers associated with specific brands, the effectiveness of each range of SPF, and explain ingredient listings. After you’ve done your research and feel confident in your choice remember these tips:

  • An SPF of 30 or higher is the best choice for skin-cancer prevention and should be used on any part of the body that is exposed to the sun including the lips.
  • Slather on enough lotion to fill a shot glass and reapply every couple of hours that you are outside, more frequently if you are sweating or spending time in the water.
  •  Once you’re out of the sun, rub borage oil into the skin to protect against sun-related aging and reverse damage from UV rays. Borage oil is not a substitution for sunscreen.
  • When purchasing a sunscreen, check the ingredient list for zinc oxide, a shield against UVA and UVB rays.
