A healthy liver is important to our overall health. This organ works overtime to purify our blood, remove toxins, and has a hand in nearly every function our body completes. Take a look to see easy, natural ways you can support a healthy liver through food and herbs!

The liver is the largest organ in our bodies and is a vital part of our day. Most of us are guilty of taking our liver health for granted and don’t consider the hard work it does until something goes wrong. While we aren’t able to feel our liver working, it plays a vital part in nearly all body functions from skin conditions to detoxifying our blood. Taking care of this busy organ is important as it serves as a protector of sorts to your body. Damage to or malfunctioning of our livers can result in serious, potentially life-threatening conditions. Sounds pretty severe, right? Take a look below to see how you can support your liver naturally and keep this organ working in tip-top shape.

Hanna’s List of Foods to Support Liver Health

To detoxify the liver drink carrot juice after breakfast.

A healing breakfast for the liver (and intestine) is 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed, 2 tablespoons whey, and 2 apples peeled and finely grated. Mix these ingredients and serve with honey.

To stimulate the liver mix a ½ teaspoon of nutmeg into one cup hot water, drink.

Hanna listed white beans, artichokes, yams, allspice, and apples as being food for the liver.

Herbs for Liver Support

Milk Thistle is a powerful herb for liver health and has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for liver ailments. The function of this herb in your liver is to protect from toxins, including certain drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), which causes damage in high doses. Milk Thistle has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is believed to assist the liver in repairing itself by growing new cells. This herb is often suggested as a treatment for cirrhosis of the liver, mushroom poisoning, and viral hepatitis.

Hanna's Liver Formula

Dandelion Root is a liver strengthener, cleanser, and is useful in improving liver function. Dandelion leaf is often used to help with liver disorders. This “weed” that is a nuisance in our yards is actually a great benefit to our bodies!

Hanna blended Goldenrod, Goldenseal root, and Clove bud together in her Liver Formula to provide a nourishing herbal food to support healthy liver function. This combination, as well as a wholesome diet, influence the liver’s performance at peak efficiency.

Herbs and foods are effective ways to support your liver naturally. While unhealthy liver function is difficult to detect, there are signs to watch for: intolerance to greasy or spicy foods, weight gain, frequent headaches, indigestion, chronic constipation, skin conditions (such as eczema, psoriasis or rashes), bowel problems, or sinus and allergy problems.

Our livers work overtime to move toxins from our bodies and act as a filter for everything that comes into our systems. Keeping our livers healthy is easier than you may think. See this post for how you can do that with natural herbs and tinctures.

Oh, the mighty liver. This organ is your body’s primary “filter,” and in some healing systems is considered the seat of anger and frustration. It processes all of the hormones, medications, and toxins that pass through your body. It also produces glucose, your brain and muscles’ primary fuel. As well, did you know it is the only part of the human body that can re-grow itself? That’s right, you can lose up to 2/3 of your liver to disease or injury and it will regenerate. Most people would of course prefer to avoid this experience, so what can you do to keep your liver healthy?

Milk Thistle is useful for liver health and detox.

Milk Thistle seed has been used for ages to protect this vital organ from damage. It is most effective in an extracted form, such as Kroeger’s Milk Thistle Complete Concentrate. Taken regularly this wonderful herb has been shown to help reduce wear and tear on your liver. To help “clean the liver out,” and help everything flow smoothly, Dandelion root, Yellow Dock root and St. John’s Wort are traditional remedies. As well, a strong flush using Epsom salts, olive oil and grapefruit can be a powerful tool. We here at Hanna’s make a kit called, would you believe it, the “Liver Cleanse Kit” designed for just this purpose.

On the more esoteric side of things, there are herbs that can be used to ease emotional turmoil “stored up” in the liver. Lavender and Melissa (Lemon Balm) are used to “relax” the channels of “chi”. This allows anger and stress to be released. St. John’s Wort fits this bill as well. It may sound like these things are completely unrelated, but Chinese herbalism has recognized the connection for thousands of years.
